"When I was writing these words, I was thinking about the motto of the European Union: united in diversity. And I was thinking about what this diversity means and what unity means? Diversity is an important characteristic of Europe, different cultures and languages meet on a land which is diverse geographically too. And this diversity is also part of the European past, specifically in the way Europe has renewed itself again and again after so many crises and wars.
How difficult is it to create unity in this diversity? We have to find a balance in which everybody can keep their own diverse characteristics and allow different cultures to live together. There is a need of openness, tolerance and respect for each other. People around me still have a lot of prejudice and fear, this inhibits people to get to know and accept others, to respect other cultures, to see the human in others and to welcome people who are different from us. And the violence against each other also comes from these prejudices and fears. If we don't make an effort to get to know and understand each other, to understand why other people do, what they do, we cannot live in peace together. These thoughts were working in me when I wrote the lines of my❤ poem." Aliz Sipos
